Mouse tail injury! Please help! Empty Mouse tail injury! Please help!

Post by Cutestpuffstuff Fri 29 Sep 2017, 11:45 pm

I just noticed the tail of my female fancy mouse is injured. I just bought her a couple of weeks ago and she was perfectly healthy.  She lives in a pretty big cage with another female mouse that she gets along with great.  They were together at the pet store.
I'll attach an image but can someone help tell me if they know what's wrong with her?

Unfortunately I can't see the images. Is she bleeding? Is it a serious looking injury or does it look like a small cut on the tail? I had a mouse bite another mouse on the tail once and she recovered just fine, but it was just a small, non-serious cut. If it is bleeding heavily and/or looks really bad, I'd suggest getting her to the vet as soon as you can. Good luck!

I can see that pic fine. (It's not bleeding, but looks scraped raw in one spot.)

That looks to me like she might have been nipped there and the skin torn away or scraped off. Does she tussle with her nestmate? Do you hear random squeakage going on? Hopefully there are no budding dominance/bullying behaviors starting up.

In the alternative, depending what you have for objects in the cage, it could be possible that her tail got caught somewhere and it might be self-inflicted. (?) in that case, assess objects closely to see what might have caused it. Not likely but possible. Nip/scrape seems more probable. I know one of my girls ripped off a toenail once, catching it in the corner where cage bars crossed.

I don't know that there's much you can do for that kind of injury. I would say dab neosporin on it to guard against infection, but she will lick it right off. Just keep an eye on it and if doesn't get better in a day or two, or if it looks red or puffy, definitely take her to the vet.

For what it's worth, mouse skin heals more quickly than human skin (they have fast metabolisms), so it may heal up well on its own. Is she in any pain, or favoring her tail?

Hello, looks to me like she may have just scraped it on something. From what I can see from the photos it doesn't look to bad. Is she fooling with it? Hopefully someone else here will have some info for you. She is beautiful by the way Very Happy

It doesn't look too bad - keep an eye on it to check it doesn't get infected.
Does she live with another mouse who might have bitten or caught it? Or maybe she got it caught on something in her cage?

(Also, I noticed you posted the same question in two places - I'd recommend just posting once as then it gets less confusing for everyone!)

I agree, could be a bite or scrape. It looks ok. I would leave it be and watch closely for infection or for her messing with it too much. Also watch to see if there's any signs of fighting or a place she could have snagged it.

I also wanted to add that a lot of time bleeding from tail injuries can look worse than it really is. Sort of like head injuries for us. As long as it stops bleeding, which I see it has.
