Flea treatments (for dogs)
Does anyone know of any alternative flea treatments for dogs, other than flea collars and/or the flea medicine that goes on their fur?
I'm pretty sure our family dog, Rosie, has fleas. She hasn't had them in years, but suddenly this morning she was scratching like crazy, and tonight I saw a flea walk across her belly. I gave her a warm bath with some dog shampoo right now, hoping to get some of them off. Though I know fleas are hard to kill, so that likely didn't do much. She has a severe reaction to all the flea collars and medicines we've tried, it makes her act strange and once temporarily made her unable to move her back legs Would flea shampoo be any different, or is it made of the same stuff?

Dish soap kills fleas but it won't prevent new ones. You could bathe her in dish soap and then flea comb to catch stray ones. Treat her environment for any fleas and cross your fingers she doesn't pick up more. If it's already a big problem I imagine your vet has some other ideas.

Re: Flea treatments (for dogs)
Thank you! Since her bath last night I haven't seen her scratch at all, and I have seen no more fleas. We will definitely wash her bed and blanket. If it becomes an issue again, I will consider the dish soap bath! I can ask our vet, but usually he just recommends the stuff that you drop on their fur, not sure if he has any other options. It's weird because our big dog has no reaction to it at all, and it always gets rid of the fleas well, but Rosie, our little doggy, has extremely bad reactions to it.

They have chewable treatments, too. Not sure how they work or if they would be a better option, but perhaps something to look into if you ever need to revisit it.
I know I'll sound crazy, but I'm so impressed with dish soap and it's ability to kill bugs. I usually try not to kill things, but when there's too many you can't help it. I put wine in a little bowl with a drop of Dawn in it, and it took care of our horrid fruit fly problem in only a few days. Whee.

Re: Flea treatments (for dogs)
My local low-cost spay/neuter clinic sells very affordable flea treatments... I'd recommended looking to see if you've got a place like that in your area if you don't want to pay an arm and a leg. In order to get rid of fleas. Anyway, not sure that helps with your issue, but just a thought.
