How much food? Empty How much food?

Post by lupus_corde Sat 16 Jul 2016, 2:41 am

So as I will be a new mouse mum in a few weeks I was wondering how much food to feed my mice. How many grams per mouse? And how is varies for a young/fully grown/old mouse? Would really appreciate some advice here Smile

- The mice will be from a breeder and not a petshop

I have never measured out their food. I free feed them... just fill the bowl and when it runs down, I refill. In addition to that, I also scatter feed. They really enjoy foraging for food, but since there really isn't a way to monitor that, I also like to make sure there is food in the bowl.

I don't find much wasted food during weekly cleanings feeding this way.

Good to know Smile so a small bowl is enough for 3 mice provided it is filled to the top? I think I will also get a small one for some fresh fruit and veg too Smile

If they are from a breeder, you should pose that question directly to the breeder as well. Plus find out what specifically they are fed.

I never measure really either. I just dump a bunch of food in and if they aren't getting too fat or skinny i generally keep it around the same amount.

I remember measuring with my very first mice for the first little while, and i went with a tablespoon full of seed mix per mouse.

I don't like giving my mice fresh stuff in their tanks as i worry about spoilage. If i give them fresh stuff i give it to them in their playpens where i can monitor what they do with it, as mice will often nibble and drop bits or hide stuff for later. In hot weather especially it can go bad fast.

I only ever weighed in the beginning to know exactly how much food they eat within two days. Now I always just give them that amount and adjust if I gain/lose a mouse. My girls go through 32g of seeds in two days. Henry is around 14g, but I'm still making adjustments. This'll vary based on your mice's personal needs.

I don't measure food either. I just keep two bowls, for my one male mouse, with two different types of food so he has a choice. I agree when feeding veggies/fruit to do it outside of the cage to prevent spoilage. I also will hide treats different places in his tank as he seems to have fun finding them. Last night Mickey was on the hunt for Cheerios! So cute to watch!
