Awesome thread! Hm, Abeona, somehow I thought you were older. No offense XD Laughing
I remember drawing that kitty... Just the other day, I was wondering what her name was! I had totally forgotten. Sunflower. I need to write that down Smile

Your drawing of Sunflower was the background on my phone for a looong time. It only changed because my phone got stolen. I love it. Smile

Aw, thanks! I had a lot of fun with it.
Lol no I didn't mean by the photos, I just meant by the way you came across to me when interacting on the forum. You seemed very mature.... Embarassed I don't know what I'm saying Razz

Aww, your kitties are lovely, Abeona!

Thanks Scaredy. Perry was quite the cutie. Especially when she'd get sleepy and she'd puff up like a poofy balloon.

I understood, Artist... I like to watch more than participate, so a lot of times people only get to know me based on how I'm looking. It's nice to hear something different than "You're not like 12?". Giggling

We had a cockatiel from my step-dad's grandma. His song sounded like Barbie Girl. lol Edit: Now that I look this up, I guess it's not so unique!

Judy was my kitty growing up - her sister, Hope, was my sister's cat.

Ringo, who was at a shelter I was volunteering at during college.  He was adopted and returned, then returned again years later when I was in a position to finally have a dog.  I had him for almost 7 years.

Cool Photos everyone!

I am loving seeing everyones other pets.  And I can't believe how long some of these other pets live.  Like I can't believe Lucy is 11 years old.  A little fishy!  And I had no idea that hermit crabs lived so long.  Fascinating Smile

I'm going to add all the pictures first and then I'll make another post explaining everything. I still haven't figured out how to insert photos between text. Some of my pets will have multiple photos because I have a lot of favorites. And some will have only one because I can't find any others.

In the first picture is my rabbit Snowball. As you can see I was pretty young when I got him. He was an albino, I guess you can call him a PEW. He was a very sweet bunny and I played with him all the time. We would run all over the back yard together. I was really too young to properly care for a rabbit and just did what my parents told me to. They never really researched much about rabbit care. I feel bad because he was kept outside, but he did have a pretty cool cage my dad made. I really don't remember what happened to him in the end

Next is a picture of our dog Zion. We got him from a rescue in 2005. I worked at the grooming department at Petco at the time and they had pet adoption groups on the weekends. Zion was there for a few weeks and it took me a lot of talking to him over several days to get him to come to me. We was so scared, huddled in the corner. Once we got him it took a couple weeks for him to warm up to my husband. We knew he would be a handful by his behavior but we also knew nobody else would take better care of him than us. He was about 5 months old when we got him. The rescue group found him in a thunderstorm under a light pole. He has become the greatest dog, and he is so sweet. He's very smart, I only have to show him something once or twice and then he knows it. He knows many commands. He loves to go camping and hiking, we call him mountain dog. We were worried about how he would be with our son because he has always been afraid of children but he is so great with him. Rowan loves him. In 2010 he developed epilepsy, and it's a really bad case. It took two years for the Dr.'s to finally get a good mix of medicines that worked for him. We had to finally go to a specialist. Thankfully his seizures are controlled now and he only has them every once in a while. At one point he was having 30 seizures in 24 hours!! That was so stressful and terrifying. But now the meds are taking their toll on him, that plus old age is making us realize that it's almost time to take him in. We have been trying to put it off and keep him around as long as possible but we can see it's almost time. That is going to be hard, he is our baby.

The next two pictures are of our cat Willow. We got her in 1996. We had just gotten our first cat Gypsy Moon, and our friends called us and asked if we wanted a kitten and we said no. A few days later we went to their house for dinner and when we walked in they put this tiny little black and white kitten in our hands. We couldn't refuse that little face. She was so cute. She was the runt of the litter and would eat whenever she was stressed, so she got really big. She was a sweet cat. She developed diabetes and we had to give her insulin shots twice a day for a few years until it was time to put her down. She was 16 years old.

The next picture is of Gypsy Moon. She is my favorite cat ever and I miss her so much. I got her from a rescue on my birthday in 1996, about 2 months before we got Willow. She was the best cat, so sweet and well behaved. When she was found she was about a year old and pregnant, the babies were stillborn. I think she might have been older than they thought. Gypsy was the softest cat I've ever felt, like a chinchilla. She used to curl up at my head on my pillow and just purr, I would fall asleep to that. I miss her so much. Our newest cat Xena reminds us so much of Gypsy, we call he Gypsy by accident all the time. Gypsy always greeted us at the door and would lay on her back. And she had the cutest meow, it was very raspy. I've never heard another cat sound like her. She was always laying on us. Her death came on suddenly. She was always very healthy and all of a sudden she started loosing weight and then she couldn't walk right, we took her in and they said she was having kidney failure. We gave her I.v. Fluid for a couple days but took her in and had her put down. It was so sudden that it was very hard. That was in 2013 and she was at least 17 years old.

I'll talk about the rest in a little while. I need a break.

There's a lady who had two Purple Pinchers (C. clypeatus), one passed in it's late 30s a few years ago.  Last I heard the other still lives. Mind you, that's 30-something years with her.  They were probably at least a couple years old when she got them.

I have one Purple Pincher that I adopted in May 2014. His previous owner had him for 13 years before that.

Edit: Carol Ormes is her name. "Kate" died in 2011 but as of 2013 "Jonathan" was still alive at 37 years with her. So if he's still alive he's around 40. http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/giving-hermit-crabs-a-full-long-life

It's thought that they can live even longer in the wild. Sadly in captivity the average I think is around 10 years for the more common Purple Pincher. More exotic species tend to do even worse in captivity. (Only a handful of "crabbers" around the world have succesfully raised captive bred hermit crabs to land, so all in the pet trade are wild caught. Why I choose to adopt over buying.)

Edit again:  I should add that my guess of an average of 10 years is with proper care.  Far far more die within weeks or months because so many buy them on a whim and don't research. Not to mention all the ones that probably don't survive capture and shipping.

Wow, that is vey interesting about Hermit Crabs! Thank you for sharing that website I enjoyed reading it. And, I too, had no idea they could live that long.

*cinna- Perry is so darn cute!  And I love frogs.  I'm happy there are so many in our back yard.  Big juicy ones, too Smile

to answer someone's question... Honeybun was in the back room at Petco.  I saw a tiny sign on one of the hamster tanks that said they had a hamster in the back room that needed adopting.  I asked about it and I sorta knew the worker, so he started telling me about her and after I laid my eyes on her... I just couldn't believe it.  they allegedly had been treating her but gave up.  once I got her to the vet, they determined that she had scabies and ringworm, anemia, malnutrition, and her immune system was shot.  she ended up being on oral antifungals her whole life, which eventually caused liver failure.  she was 6 months old when i got her and I had her for about a year... it was a good year.  she was such a great ham.  I loved to see her run.  I was so happy to make her happy... and she was always happy.  I was so broken hearted when she died.

On day one, she could barely walk but by day 7, she began to run.  She was so little, even for a dwarf hammie.  I think she weighed about 30g most of her life.  It was my absolute pleasure to care for her.  If I talk about her too much, I still get really weepy.  I miss her so much.  In fact, I need to stop writing about her, I'm starting to get teary eyed.  She was the best...

Here's a video of her after a week with me Smile
https://youtu.be/ZZQQOQB25ek

And here's a video of her carrying a milkbone around in her later in life.
https://youtu.be/5ohZ2slmIFI

Thank you so much for the story of Honeybun. So very sad that PetCo let her get to that point of such bad health and suffering. You were Honeybun's angel! The progress within that first week was just amazing. Thank you for rescuing her from her suffering and from a certain death if she had been left there. Sorry I upset you by asking about her. It made me tear up too. Thank you for sharing.
