Seriously Worried Empty Seriously Worried

Post by CinnamonPearl Wed 27 Jul 2016, 4:14 pm

Okay so I know everyone told me not to worry about Rosie dropping in weight a little, but now I'm seriously worried about ALL my girls. It's tank cleaning day, so I checked everyone's weight as usual. Henry was normal, but Mabel, Rosie, and Egg were not. Rosie is now down to 26.5g (the scale was hovering between 26 and 27), Egg has dropped 6g from her normal and is now 60g, and Mabel has dropped even further and is now 32g. And on top of that, everyone is acting bizarre. I had Egg out today, and instead of waddling around the table like normal, she was just sitting in one place. When I picked her up, she sorta just sunk her weight into my hand. It was weird. And Rosie has been slow and sluggish too. It looks like an old age thing, but now I'm starting to suspect it's not. The only one acting completely normal is Henry, and now I'm gonna start washing my hands before going in between their tanks. Mabel is acting fine, but she's dropped even further than she was. I'm gonna put her back on benebac, but I don't think something as simple as that is going to help. I'm gonna call their vet in the morning and discuss looking for tapeworm again, but what else can I do? Also, please don't tell me this is just an old age thing. Egg is only thirteen months old, and she's acting up. This is NOT an old age thing.

I think the vet appointment is a very good idea. I hope you can get to the bottom of whatever's going on.

You know what, I think I'll make one for tomorrow. After all, no remedy the vet has given me over the phone has worked so far. It'd probably be best if everyone saw her. I'm gonna have to have a talk with her about how all these powdered medications she's been giving me just aren't gonna work anymore. Maybe she has some liquid benebac for Mabel.

That is bizarre. Good luck getting to the bottom of it, hopefully the vet can figure it out for you.

I think you are in uncharted territory with your girls... I'm afraid I don't have any input. Hopefully the vet will be able to help.

How old are the girls again?

Have you tried giving them really awesome treats? I am talking the kind that they flip out for so badly that they can barely think when you give them to them.

Example, my mouse was walking the edge of her tank, just doing a lap to see what was going on when i put her special treat in the tank. She freaked out, and in a panic couldn't remember how to get down. Like she ran all around the lid and eventually dove face first into her water bottle holder (not the way she gets up and down) and got stuck in it. Then she had to back out, was back on the lid and was just losing her mind because she literally was so excited for her treat she forgot how to get down off her lid.

Positive emotions help. It gives mice something to look forward to, a boost of happy hormones and couldn't hurt with the weight.

Thanks Peas. I'll try it.

Update: they had their appointment yesterday. No results so far, but I'm meant to bring back a fecal sample for testing. The vet also seems to think it's some sort of parasite. I also have to take some from Henry just in case. I'll let you guys know once the results come in.

So the fecal test came up negative for parasites, but I'm not convinced. The vet is due to call me; I'll discuss retreating them for tapeworm then.

Well, I managed to convince their vet to give treatment, so the girls are on a round of praziquantel. I really hope it will help. Mabel is down to 28, the lowest she's ever been. I'm just not sure anymore, but at least she's still happy and friendly. She looks worse and worse every day. Her checks are swollen now, and her left eye (the one she used to scratch) looks really messed up. It's all discolored; I doubt she can see out of it.

I guess the only good thing is her OCD is gone. Both the area around her eye and her ear are healing. But compared to all this other stuff, I miss it.
