hamsters
I'm such a bleeding heart. My friends rescue just got a ridiculous amount of hamsters that need homes, many of which have special needs. And i let her talk me into taking one. That's on top of a baby Chinese hamster that i already agreed to. To sweeten the deal, she's even delivering them to me. Furthermore, i don't have any tanks available... And she's like, don't worry ill give you a bin cage. Problem solved. So, soon you will meet my 2 new hamsters.
Before i agreed to all that, i got on the waitlist with the Strong Brew Hamstery. They breed the most beautiful and gentle hams. I thought just once I'd like a well bred, healthy ham. So, by the end of the year... I'll be one more ham richer

Re: hamsters
Awwww. Can't wait! Is this the place that took in a crazy number of hams from Florida?
It'll be neat to get a healthy, well bred ham too! I can't wait for you to share pics.

Re: hamsters
The other two will be Syrians.
And yes, I'm getting one of the Florida hamsters. She rescued 118 from there. It's a sad story... But at least these 118 are safe and will be loved.

Re: hamsters
It is a sad story. I was just reading about it earlier today. So sad that even after the rescue contacted the shelter they still went ahead and euthanized so many females. I know they have to make hard decisions like that every day but it still breaks my heart. What in the world was that gentleman doing with so many hamsters in the first place!? Failed mill? It's horrible.
Here's the story from their GoFundMe page for anyone interested.

- The Florida Fiasco:
- The Florida Fiasco has begun! Of course, by Florida Fiasco we mean a large intake of 150+ syrian hamsters are traveling to The Pipsqueakery this Friday May, 26th. Ultimately we plan to transfer many of these hamsters to other rescues for adoption all over the country, but before we do that we have to make sure they are healthy, past any pregnancy risks, and relatively adoptable.
Here’s their story. On Monday, May 22, 2017 a man brought 75+ hamsters into a shelter in Florida, thus beginning The Florida Fiasco. He told the employee doing the intake know that he had a large number of hamsters still at home but since he couldn’t afford the surrender fee he just brought some of them. That wonderful employee let him know that if he brought all of the hamsters in the next day the surrender fee would be waived. An hour and a half after the intake that employee contacted me asking for help and agreed to drive the hamsters all the way to us if we could get the go-ahead for a transfer. Unfortunately, by mid-afternoon that same day many of the females from the initial intake had been euthanized because they could have been pregnant and most shelters simply aren’t equipped to handle an intake that large when it could have easily tripled in numbers because of the pregnancies. At 3:30 I got ahold of the director of the shelter and offered our assistance officially as up until that point I had only been in contact with an employee of the shelter. We knew that we had to act quickly if we hoped to save the rest of the hamsters from euthanasia.
The next day, May 23, 2017, the same man brought another 75+ hamsters to the shelter. At this point we had not yet worked out a transfer arrangement, but we tried to make it clear that there was no need to euthanize healthy females. We were sure we could handle all of them, and for us it would make more sense to emergency spay or even euthanize the litters after birth for the health of the mother. However, we knew that the unfortunate reality was that shelters have to make tough choices and the females from this group were also euthanized.
On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, we reached an agreement with the director of the shelter to transfer the remaining 93 hamsters (plus several litters of babies) to The Pipsqueakery. Their employee was willing to do the driving and The Pipsqueakery was willing to fund the costs of the transport.
That brings us to today! It’s time for us to start fundraising to help these furry little critters. We need donations to help cover the cost of extra bedding, extra food, veterinary care, a few chew toys, the inevitably destroyed water bottles, transport costs, and all the other little things that it takes to do a rescue this big. I know the goal of $10,000 seems high, but it comes out to us spending approximately $100 to save each hamster which is actually pretty reasonable. Of course, some hamsters will not require any extraordinary care so they won’t be nearly that expensive to rescue, but some hamsters will also likely need veterinary care and even surgery to get to the point where they are adoptable. This money will go towards all of their basic needs, any veterinary care they need, and the expenses associated with transport (which is actually really expensive).

Re: hamsters
From what I understand, it all started with 2 hamsters. So, it sounds like an irresponsible accident that got out of control to me.CallaLily wrote:It is a sad story. Re: hamsters
I think it was more of a hoarding situation. i don't know how it could be anything else. The worst part of the massive euthanasia is that it left a lot of 3 week old babies that don't have moms. They have young hams that are literally screaming because they are scared and miss their moms. Its heart breaking. My poor friend only has so many hands. This ones been hard on her.
The shelter really mishandled this whole thing. I'm sure they were overwhelmed and but it didn't have to be like this.
I have no idea which ham she's going to give me. She asked who i wanted but there's no way i can choose. I don't need any more hamsters! So, i want one that needs me. So she's going to send me one of her favorites that needs a little tlc. I wish he was here now for me to love.

Re: hamsters
Oh my gosh. I'm so glad she was able to save the rest. I wish I could adopt one. The one that she sends to you is a lucky ham. I know you'll spoil him rotten and he'll live out the rest of his days in comfort.

Re: hamsters
My Florida ham should be here in about 10 days. My Chinesey ham in about 4-6 weeks. And my designer ham in October-ish.
Sadly though, my robo Boopers is dying. She probably only has a couple days left. And my 3 Syrians are all turning two by the end if the year. So there will be a lot of loss coming with my new additions

He looks so sweet! Congrats on him It's so sad the whole incident, I wish I could adopt one of the hams from there, but I don't have the space for another square metre cage ATM
