Covering up food dish

Why do they do this?? As soon as I put good fresh food in their cage, they cover it up with shredded paper! I put baby cereal in for the new babies and mother covers that up. Do they lick it off the paper? I know they like to eat it. Why does she do that?

It's instinct to hide their food. 
You could try placing the food dish up off the floor, but they may still do it anyway.
