Mice in an eagle nest!
So, I like to watch these live cameras on Explore.org, especially the eagle nest and osprey nest, those are my favorites. It's really neat to see them raise their young from a little egg to their first flight. Every morning, it's a mystery what they are going to catch and bring back to eat, so it's fun to watch and see what they get. Normally it's fish, on rare occasions they will bring back something else.
Anyways, one thing I did not expect to see in an eagle live cam was 4 little mice scavenging on the items the eagles had in their nest! The eagle was asleep, but how brave are these mice for sneaking in front of a sleepy eagle to eat some meat? Anytime the eagle made any sort of movement, the mice would freak out and run away, then come back a few seconds later It was pretty cool, not what I expected to see! Anyways, here is the link to the exact moment in the live cam when the mice were there, it was recorded, so what you are watching here is not live footage but the footage I saw last night: https://youtu.be/LD9uuYRXJYs?t=42m37s
If you'd like to watch the live cam, you can find that here: https://explore.org/livecams
Here are a few snapshots of the mice if you can't watch the video:

Neat! I’ll try to watch the video but I’m over my limit so it probably won’t load for me. Could you tell what it was they were scavenging? Or what species of mouse?

Re: Mice in an eagle nest!
Not sure! I believe someone in the comments on Explore.org said that the eagles had brought in a small bird and a fish of some kind, so it could be either of those. Not something you'd normally think of a mouse eating, but I guess if it's there, they'll take advantage of it! As for the species, the cam is located in Santa Cruz Island, CA, A small island off of California. I googled "Santa Cruz Island mouse species", and only one mouse type was coming up, the Santa Cruz Mouse lol. There isn't much info on this species, but supposedly they are endangered due to the fact that they are only found on two small islands, and these islands are home to feral cats. They are said to look similar to the North American deer mouse.CallaLily wrote:Neat! I’ll try to watch the video but I’m over my limit so it probably won’t load for me. Re: Mice in an eagle nest!
They were back again tonight, it's become a routine for them! Tonight's dinner is fish. The eagles caught a small fish today, and the mice get the leftovers
I recorded a clip from the camera tonight, it's only 1 minute, so hopefully if your device couldn't load the whole hour long archive video, it can load this clip!

Thank you for the short clip! When the wind blew the eagle’s feathers, the mice took off so fast I missed it the first time. They look well fed.

Re: Mice in an eagle nest!
Hello if any of you remember me, I've been off doing other things with other animals and have just one little girl meecer left, Terri. Anyways, I often watch the Decorah Eagle cam in Iowa from raptorresource.org, and I always love when the mice pop up to check the place out! It's a pretty safe place for them to live if you think about it.
