Tropical Carnival vs Kaytee Fiesta food?

I was at the pet store earlier to buy some more food for my girls. Disappointingly, a lot was sold out and they only had two different brands of mouse food in stock. I normally get Tropical Carnival Gourmet Pet Mouse & Rat food. Today, I bought Kaytee Fiesta Mouse and Rat food. I'll list the ingredients and analysis of both below. Is the Kaytee Fiesta mix okay?

Never had mice or rats as pets before...

When baby mice are together in their litter, there is a constant, squirmy game of "king of the hill" going on, with each mousie trying to clumsily climb to the top of the mousepile, only to have a sibling climb on top, and then another and another, until eventually mousie #1 gets out from under the usurpers and makes its way back to the top.

I'm not sure what the survival instinct is up to, to drive such activity, but it could have to do with the constantly shifting balance between the necessity for the little not-quite-furry ones to keep warm within the pile versus the necessity to come up for a bite of air and avoid overheating.

And, if you think about your hand from the "view" of a baby mouse that hasn't even opened its eyes yet, your fingers sure seem like a bunch of littermates! Mousie may prefer to keep climbing into your hand because it is trying to play "king of the hill" with your fingers. Since sleeping in the mousepile is the most natural place, and since your fingers are the closest thing mousie currently has to that, try to let your little friend spend as generous an amount of time there as you can afford.

I'm gonna bet male for Squigg -- just a guess! My girls facial yellow is very dusty, like a film, but perhaps Squigg is just a bright girl...or maybe cinnamon mutations work a little differently. To be honest, I've been referring to Squigg as a boy since I got him, how could he not be a boy with all that wolf whistling? (Im kidding of course). From most of the pictures I have seen, males tend to have a pretty defined yellow face (nice sharp edges) but he doesn't have that yet - it could just be that he needs to go through another moult but who knows.
DNA will be sorted tomorrow (Sunday), I have a friend meeting me at work - she gets to be the big baddy who plucked some of his feathers - not me.

Remember the tiel I mentioned in my previous post? The one I got rejected from adopting because my birds are caged at night or when I'm not home? Said friend mentioned above is also bringing her to me! Granted it's more of a "Hey! I couldn't rehome her before my holiday so here!" type thing. I don't get much say in this whole thing (we all know I actually do but I'm far to nice at the best of times), but gosh, from what I've been told she's a total doll and I don't know if she will leave. Am I prepared for a potential breeding pair of tiels? Gosh no..

Another wee update I'm super excited about.
A friend of mine runs a small scale mobile petting zoo type business, so she has all sorts of animals. She ended up with 2 goats that honestly.. may as well be feral and of course, pregnant. She recently lost her pet goat that she used for the petting zoo thing so she asked me if I'd be interested in bottle feeding the babies from these "feral" goats when they're born (well you know, a few days after birth so they get all the colostrum etc they need). Who was I to say no?
Mumma #1 gave birth yesterday. 3 babies in all. Sadly, two of them weren't meant for this world so there is only one itty bitty baby left - he's coming to me on Tuesday! Look at those floppy ears

Apparently the world wants me to have a baby goat after all!

What are you doing today?

When I was younger, my parents called me an alien because I was "never tired." Today I took a nap at like 5:30. It might be because I'm sick and my tooth hurts. But I decided to start Googling to see if 26 is late twenties or still mid-twenties. I don't know. But I found this:

So on Facebook I once posted that I can't wait to be 28 and pondered starting to tell everyone that I'm 28 now so that I can be 28 for a few extra years. The Buzzfeed list was posted on my birthday AND 28 is #1. This is like confirmation that 28 will be the best year ever.

Today I also attempted to finish painting our bedroom. It was orange, now it'll be a hazy gray-purple. Boring! But I like it. Chicken and baked potatoes for dinner. It sounds like I'm losing my voice. I don't want it to go away. I want it to stay. My cat also broke his tail. We're a busy bunch of creatures around here.

Biting.. Sorta?

Rocky is such a strange mouse. He seems to like me, and likes being petted. He waits for me up at the hammock, and I take him out for a while and just sorta free range him somewhere, like the lid of a bin, in a bin, the lid of my hamster's cage, or sometimes I just take him to see the girls, haha. I get him in my hand and hold him up to the glass so he can see them. However, he bites me sometimes...? It doesn't seem to be out of territorial issues or anything. And it isn't hard, either. When Scout bites me, my finger bleeds like crazy and it hurts. It never bleeds with Rocky though, it isn't a nip, but a bite sort of on the more gentle side. I do sprinkle chia seeds, flax seeds, etc. through the screen of his tank sometimes though, should I stop doing that? Maybe he associated my finger with food? The last 2 times he bit me, this is how it happened:

Scenario #1: I was removing items from his tank, getting ready to clean it. I removed everything except his hide where he was sleeping. I carefully brushed away the bedding from the front of his hide with my finger, then suddenly felt his teeth biting my finger. He was probably startled?

Scenario #2: This was today, actually. I took him out for a photo shoot. He was in a little igloo hide, and started to dig into the bedding underneath it. I just put my finger near his face while he was digging, and he nipped me. He didn't seem upset or anything, it was just kind of a random nip

What does it sound like the issue is?

What should I say?

No - There isn't much, actually. Basically, it is two Crittertrail size cages out on a table, and the doors are open on them. Crittertrail #1 has Carefresh bedding, a water bottle, a 7 inch wheel, and a small hidey house. Crittertrail #2 has two inappropriately sized wheels, a food dish, and a water bottle. Then, out on the table, there is a mesh wheel, it looks to be the 4.5 inch one, but I can't tell for sure, a water bottle, some kind of stick to chew on, 1 TP tube, a mason jar, and a food dish. The bedding for the table is just felt or fleece, it looks like. I can compliment them on the out of cage time, and their use of mesh wheels (since mice love mesh wheels!), thanks!

I need some help naming my mice!

I'm not sure what to pick for mouse #2, and you've already picked for mouse #1, but for mouse #3, I like fawn, it just fits her personality

I need some help naming my mice!

Hello everyone! So I've had my 3 girls for 3 weeks now and I still have not decided on names for them yet. I've limited my list down to about 15, but here are my favorites for each mouse. If you have any suggestions or opinions please feel free to leave them! (I could really use some help, lol

)

Mouse #1-
Very outgoing, was the least afraid of my hand at first. Always wants to do what the others are doing (sees someone running on the wheel, she goes on the wheel. Sees someone at the water bottle, she drinks out of the same bottle). Curious, smart, and loves climbing. She is a leader, I would say.

Name options- Maisey (I'm pretty set on this one)

Mouse #2-
She became outgoing once she warmed up to me. She feels better about doing something if mouse #1 does it too, but she can be independent at times. Also enjoys climbing and is curious. Loves the wheel. She is kind to her sisters (gives them treats).

Name options- Kisiel (name after rogue, long story but I'm curious if people like this name), Leia, Kamini, Alina, Kasia, Kasin, Karina, Ania

Mouse #3-
She is very shy and skittish and scared of hands still. Likes to sleep and hide, always pushes bedding onto my hand or blocking the doorways of the hides in their cage. Always squints when she sniffs my hand for some reason.

Name options- Rosie, Tulip, Poppy, Fawn, Fern, Coral

Are Potatoes and "tomato pomace" Safe for Mice?

Hello, I'm looking into an organic/natural dog food that I could give my mice as treats once in a while. However, potatoes and tomato pomace appear pretty high up on the ingredient list. I was wondering if anyone knows if these ingredients are safe? I know that tomatoes should be avoided but would it be a big issue if it was in a dog food?

Here are the ingredient lists:

Mouse Lead

I really, really do not recommend it.

#1: It won't fit snugly enough to make it escape proof (mice are much smaller than most hamsters, and certainly more svelte). The mouse could wriggle out and escape. A domestic mouse getting lost outdoors wouldn't have a good survival rate.

#2: The mouse likely wouldn't enjoy it. Mice are somewhat agoraphobic - they don't feel safe in big open spaces, as they are more vulnerable to predators. Even in the wild mice tend to stay under cover, along the edges of walls, or near objects to stay more hidden - and they run. A leisurely walk out in the open is a nightmare for a mouse.

#3: You could step on your mouse.

#4: You can't control what your mouse will come into contact with. Cats, or other predators (which at the very least could make your mouse feel stressed). Droppings/urine of wild mice - which could spread diseases or parasites. Puddles or rain, which could make your mouse sick if he got wet. The cold. And that's just 3 things.

#5: Mice are fundamentally home-bodies. They do not like to be away from home, in environments that they are not used to, for long periods of time. It can be quite stressful for them.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I just don't think it's a good idea. I know you mean well, and are just trying to think of fun ways to interact with your mouse, so maybe consider other things like creating a "mouse playground" for him to explore, on a table top or in a playpen or bathtub

Favorite toys?

No matter what toys my different colonies have had over the years, the #1 favorites have always been TP rolls and half an egg carton!

Does height matter in cages?

Ventilation is more important for mice than hamsters. Obviously they both need to breathe, I'm not suggesting hamsters don't need oxygen haha. But #1 mice pee more and so ammonia will build up faster, which could be bad for their lungs without good ventilation. And #2 mice are much more susceptible to respiratory problems than hamsters, so ventilation becomes more important. So I think you would definitely need to have a cut out on the roof, or on the sides, and have that meshed over.

As for height vs. floor space, floor space is more important. BUT mice really really love to climb, and so I think the taller the better. With height you can add so many shelves, hammocks, fun climbing things. So for the 18 quart bin, without bars or much height, I wonder if they would have much climbing opportunities?

My quarantine/pre introductions cage isn't very tall - tall enough for a silent spinner, but that's about it. Maybe the 18 quart bin could be used for this purpose too?
