Re: Housing Pictures
scaredymouse wrote:The simplest one I make is just a square of fleece, folded over to make a triangle snuggle pouch hammock. Then I make one that uses one 2-ply square of fleece about 5 x 5 and another 2-ply square of fleece about 6 x 6, then glue the corners from both squares together. It will have a flat top and a covered rest area underneath.
Safety pins in the corners and attached to the screen with zip ties.
Don't think a zip tie could attach itself to my screen - what's your screen look like? Hate to be a bother, but I'm curious!

What bedding do you use? I love the colors!

Re: Housing Pictures
My setup is fairly simple right now, as a new mouse owner I don't own a lot of toys! My grandma did get angry because I have been using all my birthday money for mouse items!

Re: Housing Pictures
Uh, Gabbi, I could be wrong, but it looks like your wheel is a little small. What size do you have? Wheels that are too small can cause problems like wheel tail and arthritis.

Re: Housing Pictures
I have been thinking about that as well, their backs aren't curving, but their tails are curving... I have a flying saucer that I can put in but it takes up quite a lot of space.

Re: Housing Pictures
If their tails are curving, you're already seeing the first signs of wheel tail. It's when a mouse who's had too small of a wheel will start to curl their tail over their back all the time out of habit to avoid getting hurt. My Eglantine had it when I bought her, but she grew out of it after running on a proper wheel for long enough. So long as your saucer is also the correct size, you can switch to it, but it's probably best to just get the proper sized wheel for mice.

Re: Housing Pictures
Here is the size of the wheel, my hand for comparison. The reason I bought the silent spinner was because Skye wasn't running on the Saucer and I wanted her to get exercise.

Re: Housing Pictures
Yup, that's the perfect size! For silent spinners, you wanna go no smaller than the medium size. I believe it measures out to 7.5".

Re: Housing Pictures
Can I keep both wheel in until I get a larger Silent Spinner? Skye never uses the saucer.

Re: Housing Pictures
Yeah. But if you start to see your girls curling their tails over their backs for longer periods of time, remove it. It won't be so bad for a few days, they can drop the habit, and wheel tail won't have too many negative effects this early in their lives. Just be careful.

Re: Housing Pictures
I use so many kinds of bedding! But the fun pink stuff is Kaytee clean & cozy colors. I get blue for the boys. Purple is fun, too
Gabbi, your mice shouldn't use that small wheel for more than a few days. They will be ok with just the flying saucer until you get a bigger spinner. Either Skye will learn to use it or she's be a little bored for a few days. It's better than arthritis and wheel tail.

Re: Housing Pictures
Here is my newest setup! I like to have an attractive cage, with creative designs in it. I made a food platform last night to put the bowl on. It is slightly inspired by Anna's Animal's platform tutorial but I have made something like it before. Believe it or not, I just cleaned it this morning, they just poop on the wheel right away. I also decided to display my Tsum Tsums on top, which I may regret because I am constantly lifting the lid I also like to mix colors of bedding, and this week is Kaytee Clean and cozy in purple and Carefresh in a really pretty blue. I always like the mix Kaytee with Carefresh because I feel it doesn't have as well of an odor control.
